Davis Farms Comments on Community Events

The first event we sponsored this year was a great success! Although it was a small group that attended the class on learning how to candle eggs, everyone who was there got hands on experience and is now approved by the state to candle eggs and sell them to the public. This was the second to last hurdle for us before we get our chickens. Now the only thing standing in our way is a proper house for the chickens to live in. We have the building, it just needs some tweaking and then we'll be ready for the chickens.

We have gotten several quotes on the work that needs to be done to our road. You'll remember it was damaged in the rains we've had, and the recent downpour this past week certainly didn't improve things! The project requires several truck loads of dirt and rock, and we are weighing the quotes to see which one to go with.

Our hoop house is nearly complete, thanks to the hard work on the part of volunteers, as well as Kim and Julia. Time is running out, as it will soon be time to start our seeds for spring planting. On that note, we will be selling transplants in early April, so keep an eye out for future announcements as to the varieties of vegetables we'll be selling. For example, we have several varieties of the following; tomatoes, eggplant, sweet peppers (Jimmy Nardello among them), hot peppers, summer squash, winter squash, lettuce, cucumbers, melons etc.

Our workshop schedule for the next few months is as follows;

Sat. February 20 12:00-3:00
Micro Greens. Lets start those micro greens growing. We will talk about healthy soil, nutritional importance, seed selection and more. Everyone will leave with their own pot of micro greens. We will talk about a lot of varieties for growing and how to make beautiful and dynamic mixtures. We will talk about sources for products and how to grow on a larger scale.
Location to be announced

Sat. March 6 12:00-3:00
Making Healthy Food Fun for the Little Ones
They won't know you are feeding them wheat grass pasta, sneak it in! Peanut Butter and Jelly can be great with homemade preserves, and Peanut Butter that has only one ingredient - PEANUTS. How do you get a child to eat kale? Put it in a Kale smoothy with coconut milk & pineapples. Watch the kale turn fluorescent green and look like the goo from ghost busters but it tastes great! Soy milk can be a little intimidating on its own so start off with chocolate and there will be a smooth transition. And hey,what about soy hot dogs, they aren't any more gross than real hot dogs, I haven't met a kid yet who has known the difference.

Lets get together and TEST!

We'll talk about making healthy food fun and I will happily talk about raising my son as predominantly vegan in a non-vegan world. A choice that works for us, but is very extreme for most. Instead of talking about cutting out the bad foods let talk about sneaking in the good ones.
